The Battle of Torrington was the last major conflict of the Civil War, involving 15,000 troops. The town was occupied by The Prince of Wales' Army under the lords Hopton, Capel and Wentworth. On the night of February 16th 1646, the town was taken by the Parliamentary New Model Army under Sir Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell. This led to the defeat and eventual execution of King Charles I. Step back in time and meet the colourful 17th century characters, who will guide you through Torrington on the night of the battle.....

The Way We Lived Industry, agriculture, dairying, railways, roads, people, costume, bygones, the town, the country and the customs are all featured in our collection. Of special interest amongst the wide variety of artifacts is a display about the life and works of William Keble-Martin, author and illustrator of the Definitive Book of Wild Flowers and vicar of this Parish for 9 years. Portraits of note include the Clinton Collection.

This beautiful parish church has a history that dates back to 1107 and since that time has been one of the most important and well-loved religious structures in this area of North Devon. The current structure largely comes from the 1318 building process that was undertaken at the wishes of Bishop Stapleton. The Cobbaton Combat Collection has over 50 mainly World War II British and Canadian military vehicles and artillery pieces plus thousands of smaller items, from tanks to ration books, all undercover, plus a building dedicated to the Home Front. North Devon Maritime Museum is housed in a beautiful Georgian listed building on the edge of the historic shipyard. On the banks of the River Taw and Torridge Estuary, the area was an important player in the 18th and 19th Century shipbuilding market. The museum offers an interesting collection of memorabilia, artefacts and displays that bring to life this industrial heritage.

Unique in North Devon – 16th century watermill with 18ft overshot wheel – magnificent restoration from dereliction, containing a wealth of information and interesting machinery. The mill can produce 100% wholemeal stoneground flour and muesli if required. Unique pottery is made at the mill by Robin Gray – inexpensive giftware, tableware and individual pieces, no charge to look. See a demonstration on the potter’s wheel or ‘you’ can make a pot on the wheel. Your pot can be fired/glazed, initialled, and posted to you.
